What Can You Put in a Dumpster Bin Rental in Oakville? Accepted and Restricted Materials

Most problems with a bin rental in Oakville show up after the bin arrives. The bathroom is half torn out, the garage cleanout is in full swing, and then someone finds a can of stain or an old fridge and wonders what to do with it. This guide explains what you can put in the bin and what you can't. It follows All Stars Disposal's items policy and Halton Region's waste rules, so your bin gets picked up on time.
Why It Matters What Goes in the Bin
A rental bin goes to a disposal site that only accepts certain materials. Three things can go wrong if the wrong items end up inside:
Hazardous items in the garbage. Halton Region says household hazardous waste does not belong in the garbage, down the drain or at the curb. A banned item may have to come back out before the bin can be hauled away.
Project delays. If the bin can't be picked up on schedule, the next stage of your job waits, and so does your driveway.
What You Can Put in a Dumpster Bin Rental in Oakville
All Stars Disposal's items policy accepts six types of loads: general garbage, construction and demolition debris, and clean loads of soil, concrete, asphalt and brick. Here is what that means in practice:
Material | Status | What to know |
Household junk, furniture, boxes, clothing, toys | Accepted | Typical cleanout load. Break furniture down to save space. |
Drywall, lumber, flooring, tile, cabinets, fixtures | Accepted | Counts as construction and demolition debris. Tile and plaster are heavy. |
Branches, leaves, brush | Accepted | Tell the team when you book. Wet leaves and sod are heavier than they look. |
Asphalt shingles | Accepted | Heavy. A full roof can use up the included tonne. |
Clean soil, concrete, asphalt, brick | Accepted as a separate, clean load | Best in the 4-yard bin. Don't mix in garbage. |
Washers, dryers, stoves, scrap metal | Ask first | The items policy doesn't mention them, so confirm when you book. |
Household junk and furniture
Furniture, boxes, clothing and toys make up most garage, basement and move-out cleanouts. This is the lightest kind of load, so a 10-yard bin usually has room to spare. If an item is still in good shape, think about donating it first. Halton's Reuse Depot doesn't take furniture or mattresses, but Halton lists other options, such as the Oakville-Milton Humane Society Thrift Store and Habitat for Humanity. Call ahead to check what they accept.
Renovation and demolition debris
Drywall, lumber, flooring, tile, cabinets and old fixtures are all accepted. The usual problem on renovation jobs isn't what's allowed. It's weight. Tile, plaster and countertops are heavy, so a bin that looks big enough can go over its limit. For help picking a size, read our guide to choosing a bin size for an Oakville renovation.
Yard waste and landscaping debris
Branches, brush, leaves and sod are accepted, and All Stars says it separates wood, metal, cardboard and yard waste for recycling. Fall is when most Oakville homeowners clean up the yard. Our autumn cleanup bin guide shows how to size a bin for it. Wet leaves and soil-heavy sod weigh much more than dry brush.
Shingles and heavy clean loads
Shingles, soil, concrete, asphalt and brick are all accepted, but they're heavy. All Stars recommends its 4-yard bin for loads that are all soil, all asphalt or all concrete. Those clean loads cost $410 + tax, compared with $365 + tax for a mixed load.
Keep heavy material separate from garbage. Disposal sites handle clean loads differently from mixed waste, so one bag of garbage in a pile of concrete can change how the whole load is handled. Halton's own site has a similar rule: it won't recycle brick, concrete or rubble that has rebar, wire mesh or pieces bigger than one square foot.
What Can't Go in the Bin
All Stars Disposal's items policy lists 24 items that can't go in a rental bin:
Chemicals and liquids: acids, adhesives, aerosols, alcohol, automotive liquids, chemicals, cleaning solutions, fertilizers, oil, oil filters, paint, pesticides, sewage, solvents
Hazardous items: asbestos, batteries, fire extinguishers, propane tanks, smoke alarms
Medical items: biohazardous material, medication, needles
Other: food waste, tires
Keep these out of your garbage and your drain. Halton Region's Household Hazardous Waste Depot in Milton takes most household chemicals, batteries, medication and sharps from residents for free.
Electronics
TVs, computers, monitors and printers aren't on All Stars' banned list, but Ontario treats them as electronic waste and Halton takes them for free at its Waste Management Site. Recycling also keeps circuit boards out of the landfill. For other drop-off spots, see Recycle My Electronics. Clear your personal data from devices first.
Weight Matters More Than Size
Every All Stars rental includes 7 days and 1 tonne. Extra days cost $15 each, and extra weight costs 12 cents per kg. For example, a 1,500 kg load is 500 kg over the limit, which adds $60 + tax. A bin half full of tile, concrete or wet soil can hit the limit before a bin full of boxes and furniture gets close.
Bin | Size (L × W × H) | Best for | Price (+ tax) |
4-yard | 12' × 5' × 2' | Small projects, all-soil, all-asphalt or all-concrete loads | $365 mixed, $410 all-soil or all-concrete |
12' × 5.8' × 4' | Medium projects, household garbage | $365
12' × 7' × 4.5' | Large construction, demolition, roofing | $365
12' × 8' × 5.5' | Very large construction, commercial, industrial | $365 |
These prices come from the bin sizes page and include delivery, pickup and disposal, with no fuel surcharge. For more on sizes and costs, read our Oakville dumpster bin rental guide.
How to Load Your Bin Without Surprises
Sort first. Set aside a corner of the garage for banned items so they never end up in the bin by accident.
Remove smoke alarms and batteries. They're easy to miss in ceilings and fixtures, and both are banned.
Keep clean loads clean. Don't mix garbage into soil, concrete or brick.
Break things down. Flatten boxes and take furniture apart to save space.
Don't overfill. Keep the load at or below the bin walls and spread the weight evenly.
Cover the bin if rain is coming. Wet drywall, wood and soil are heavier.
Do You Need a Permit for a Bin in Oakville?
If the bin sits entirely on your driveway, All Stars says you don't need a permit. If it has to go on the street or boulevard, the Town of Oakville requires a road corridor permit. The Town's right-of-way policy says to apply at least 10 business days ahead, so plan early. Some major roads, such as Trafalgar Road and Dundas Street, belong to Halton Region, so a different permit office may apply.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I put shingles in a dumpster bin rental in Oakville?
Yes. All Stars lists shingles among the heavy materials its bins handle, and its 14-yard bin is positioned for large construction, demolition and roofing projects. The catch is weight: a full roof's worth of shingles can exceed the 1 tonne included with each rental, so ask for guidance when you book.
Can I throw away a mattress or couch in a rental bin?
Old furniture is among the materials All Stars' Oakville bins handle. For mattresses and box springs, mention them when you book so the team can confirm.
Is concrete allowed in a regular bin rental?
Concrete is accepted as a clean-fill load. Because it's dense, All Stars recommends the 4-yard bin for all-concrete, all-soil or all-asphalt loads. Mixing concrete into a general garbage bin is the quickest way to go over the weight allowance.
How long can I keep a rented bin?
Rentals include 7 days. If you need more time, each additional day is $15. Call before your pickup date so the extension can be scheduled.
